Who wants to be my new best friend?

As I loaded pictures onto the computer today, I realized I have many pictures for blogging fodder; however, there is one post that I have been really meaning to post. Being married to Jon has many perks, including having the manliest of men as your husband. (Yes, he sells flowers...no he is not feminine :-) ) However, one of the other benefits is when Jon decides to try out a new flower farm. That means we get samples galore. Our house is filled with flowers at these times, and then after a few days, we give them away. So, here's where the title of my blog comes in:

When I was a little girl, we moved to a new house and instead of making new friends I just followed my mom around all day. Finally, one day, she said, "Maggie, I will raise your allowance if you make friends." So, yes, it took bribing to make friends, and I guess that's what I am doing now. Here are some pictures of what you could have if you were to be my friend.

PS I'll be really offended if you are only wanting to be my friend for flowers...so make a good case. :-)

How to Crash a Family Reunion

We were invited out to Ibapah, Utah (you will have to google map it...it is in the middle of nowhere) with our friends the Warrs for the Christiansen family reunion. We didn't know anyone in the Christiansen family except for our friend Jesse Warr, but now we have learned all about their history. Jon even stayed awake to listen to a presentation about the parents and 12 kids who lived in Ibapah while the rest of us slept. So, here are some pictures to illustrate the fun we had out in Ibapah.

Jon and Jesse (on the left) were co-winners of the water balloon toss and sole winners of the egg toss. They are pictured here with our new friends from, as one of their t-shirts says, Fresno...Fres-yes! Way to go guys, way to go!

Bethany made a very valiant effort in the gunny sack race; however, when her pants began falling down, she just didn't have the focus to leave them down and win the race.

This is a disgusting picture, I know, so let me explain. They were doing a "Fear Factor" type game and asked for teams of 4. So, naturally Bethany, Jesse, Jon, and I were a team. What we didn't realize ahead of time was that we were the only ones participating over the age of 10. In the game above, one team member had to have life savers put on her face. The other team members had to lick the lifesavers and stick them on her face. Whoever had the most lifesavers on her face at the end of 60 seconds won, so the Lifesavers had to be licked repeatedly. Yes, there is nasty slobber from my other teammates all over my face. But, most importantly, we won! We relished in our glory over these 10-and-under kids.

In this game, Bethany had to put her face in a whipped cream pie and get all the worms out. Yes, we relished in our glory of winning this game, too.

In this game, Jon had to pull "eyeballs" out of pudding goop. As he was placing them in my hands, he was splashing pudding on me. That's why I have the disgusted look on my face. Kind of funny that I wasn't too grossed out by having 3 people's slobber on my face, but I don't want pudding on my shirt.

The last game of "Fear Factor" was the one Jesse did. The plunger IS new. It was filled with chocolate pudding. He had to lick the inside of the plunger as clean as possible. Bethany and Jesse took the plunger home as their prize. They said they needed one.

This last game we did not participate in, but it was absolutely hilarious to watch. There was a long rope with a bleach bottle full of water tied at the end. They put some foam along the rope due to mishaps the year before. One person would swing the rope around their head as fast as they could, and kids would jump over it. Well, first up was the 6-and-under crowd. Immediately, one of the kids didn't jump high enough and the rope wrapped around his legs and took him down. We were all laughing until we realized he was crying because he had the wind knocked out of him. We all clapped when he got up and limped to a chair next to his mom. Then the 10-and-under crowd went and the same thing happened. Only, this kid was as little higher off the ground and got taken down. Again, we all clapped when he finally got up and limped back to his chair. Probably not the safest game, but it was absolutely hilarious to watch.

Well, you are probably thinking about the oddity of Jon and I attending a family reunion of someone else's family. And, I will admit that now that you mention it, it is kind of funny. You are also probably thinking how ridiculous it is that we played games with 10-year-olds and that maybe we should get a life and actually have kids of our own so they can participate in these games. That's okay, you are probably right. Nonetheless, we had a blast and loved spending a little bit of time out in Ibapah! Thanks, Warrs!

The Reader's Digest Version

So, this is going to be about as bad as when I write in my journal (you know, the synopsis of the past 1-2 years). Jon and I have been working hard and playing hard lately. Here are some pictures to prove it.
Jon has talked about maybe going to helicopter school some day, so he went for a helicopter ride and even got to drive it a little bit. He said it was fun, but probably not for him. We'll see.

I got back from spending 3 weeks in Boise and did a little spring triathlon the next day. I had an absolute blast. It was super cold, but a ton of fun!
That afternoon after the triathlon, Jon and I headed out to the desert west of Salt Lake to shoot guns and ride his dirt bike. It was a lot of fun.
A few weeks ago, my friend Anita had her 30th birthday party. She is honestly one of the most fun party planners. She had a henna artist (as my leg is displaying above..it has now faded off), a belly dancer and Indian food catered by Himalayan Kitchen.

Most recently, we went camping this weekend. We headed out with our friends the Warr's to a little watershed area that was only about 40 minutes away. We gathered firewood (as shown above) around the area. Jon had to drive with his head out the window for several miles on our way back to the campground. It was super cold, but we had a blast...it was so great to just be outside.

Well, there you have it: a 30-second synopsis of our lives in the last month. We hope you are all doing well!

Congratulations, Jarom!

For those of you wondering what my brother Jarom is up to, he just got accepted into the Navy's nuclear program today! We are so excited for him. He will begin training with them as soon as he graduates next spring (2010). The program is incredibly competitive. 70% of those who turn in an application are not even offered an interview. Way to go, brother!

Adult Things

I can't believe I am saying this, but I am so excited about food storage! I never thought this would be exciting...I must be becoming a big kid. Whatever the reason, we decided to start a food storage in our laundry room. It may not look like much, but our big bins of flour, sugar and rice hide some stuff, and we are just getting started. There is something so peaceful about following the admonitions of our church leaders! :-)

After reading this, Jon wanted to add an addendum:
For the record, there's not enough for anyone else...so get your own food storage!

Sushi-Making Magic

Jon and I took a class at Sur la table today to learn the basics of making sushi.

Here I am working my magic on the sushi:

Here is Jon's lovely sushi, and him proudly holding his product with a cookie:
Overall, we learned a lot, we had a lot of fun, we are excited to make it at home and we ate TONS of sushi. For the first time in many months, we can both say we are honestly NOT craving sushi.

Rockets Blazing in Denver

Maggie and I made run to Denver the weekend of Valentine's Day to visit Caleb and Tami and their 4 boys. We had a FANTASTIC time and only wish we could have spent more time there!

Before our trip to Denver we made a run to the hobby store to pick up some model rockets... we figured piecing the kits together would be a fun exercise for everyone (which it certainly was). Unfortunately we had several engines which were duds and wound up losing one rocket after our night launch. Despite these minor issues... I think all would agree our launches were smashing successes!

Below are some of the pictures of our rocket launching experience:

Our trip also included a trip to a pottery painting place (Crack Pots) where we were able to show off our mad pottery painting skills. Pictures of those masterpieces will be forthcoming :-)

All in all it was a fantastic weekend. Thank you Caleb and Tami for having us!
